Effective Thinking and Writing (WRIT1999)
January, 2027 offering
The course will be held over a five-day intensive block (9am-3pm) from Monday 11 to Friday 15 January 2027* TBC at UQ’s St Lucia campus. There are no tuition fees for this course. Accommodation on campus is available.
WRIT1999 is restricted to students who are in Year 11 in 2026 who meet one of the following criteria:
- enrolled in a Queensland school at or below 1000 ICSEA (check the My School website), or
- educationally or financially disadvantaged as affirmed by the school principal (see 1.6 of the Rules and Guidelines for more information), or
- an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student enrolled in any Queensland school, or
- you are a participant in the Young Achievers Program.
Students must demonstrate a minimum average grade of B across at least 4 subjects and no less than a C in their Year 11 English subject, either in the semester prior to application or during the semester of application, as verified by the school principal.
Please note, this program is conducted in-person on the UQ St Lucia Campus. All eligible students must be based in Queensland, Australia.

Benefits for students:
- Enhanced prospects for success in Year 12 studies.
- Improved skills in gathering and assessing evidence, constructing arguments or interpretations and presenting findings in an effective way.
- Students who successfully complete WRIT1999 will be eligible to receive one adjustment towards their UQ entrance rank (1-99 scale) through the Subject Incentive Scheme.
- ESP students who later enrol in a relevant UQ degree may apply for credit for their completed course, depending on which degree they enrol in. This requires approval by the relevant Faculty.
Student accommodation (The Women's College)
We will be offering fully catered on-campus accommodation at The Women's College located at The University of Queensland, St Lucia campus. Please note:
- Limited places are available!
- Students will be supervised by a staff member with a Blue Card.
- Accommodation bookings and payment must be made by the due date (date TBC)
- You can apply for accommodation once you have received and accepted your offer.

- Sunday 11 - Saturday 17, January 2026 (6 nights) = $399
- Sunday 11 - Friday 16, January 2026 (5 nights) = $332.50
- Monday 12 - Friday 16, January 2026(4 nights) = $266
- Monday 12 - Saturday 17, January 2026(5 nights) = $332.50
- Sunday 11 - Sunday 18, January 2026 (7 nights) = $465.50
