Effective Thinking and Writing (WRIT1999)

The WRIT1999 course is offered as part of the Enhanced Studies Program (ESP). The goal of the course is to assist students from specific backgrounds in Year 11 to improve their Year 12 performance and gain access to university.

The course will be held over a five-day intensive block (9am-3pm) from Monday 13 to Friday 17 January 2025 at UQ’s St Lucia campus. There are no tuition fees for this course. Accommodation on campus is available (see below).

WRIT1999 is restricted to students who are in Year 11 in 2024 who meet one of the following criteria:

are located regionally or remotely
come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds
attend one of the eligible schools (listed below)*
are participants in the Young Achievers Program School; or
identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

Applications are open now. Applications will close at 5pm on Friday, 17 November, 2024. Please indicate on your application on what eligibility criteria you meet if you are not from an eligible school. Please note that additional supporting documentation may be requested if not from an eligible school.

*The list of eligible schools is subject to change and will be updated each intake.

Step 2: Permission and declaration form

Download the Permission and declaration form (PDF, 198 KB), and read and complete all fields. Obtain parental/guardian consent.

Step 3: Complete the online application

On the application form:
1. Under 'personal information' section, please use your official full name.
2. The program is Non-award study.
3. The commencement term for January 2025 is Summer Semester, 2024
4. The course is Effective Thinking and Writing (WRIT1999).
5. Under 'Evidence and Document Upload' include:
  - Year 11 Semester One report card
  - signed Permission and Declaration Form (both parent/guardian and school* permission required)
  - passport and visa documents (international students only)
6. Don't forget to submit!

If you are deemed eligible, you will be sent an offer which you must accept online.
If you do not accept your offer by the required time, you will be unable to participate.
Important: regularly check the email address you used for your application, including your junk mail folder, for updates on the status of your application. If you do not respond to requests for information, you may miss out on an offer.

* This may be your School Principal, Guidance Officer or other authorised school representative.

Enhanced prospects for success in Year 12 studies.
Improved skills in gathering and assessing evidence, constructing arguments or interpretations and presenting findings in an effective way.
Students who successfully complete WRIT1999 will be eligible to receive one adjustment towards their UQ entrance rank (1-99 scale) through the Subject Incentive Scheme.
ESP students who later enrol in a relevant UQ degree may apply for credit for their completed course, depending on which degree they enrol in. This requires approval by the relevant Faculty.

Student accommodation (The Women's College)

We are offering fully catered on-campus accommodation at The Women's College located at The University of Queensland, St Lucia campus.

Accommodation bookings and payment must be made by 29 November 2024.

Students will be supervised by a staff member. The following options are available:
