Effective Thinking and Writing (WRIT1999)
The WRIT1999 course is offered as part of the Enhanced Studies Program (ESP). The goal of the course is to assist students from specific backgrounds in Year 11 to improve their Year 12 performance and gain access to university. For this reason, WRIT1999 is restricted to students attending eligible schools (or Young Achievers Program School), or who identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person. The course will be held over a five-day intensive block (9am-3pm) from Monday 8 to Friday 12 January 2024 at UQ’s St Lucia campus.
The course is offered free of charge (ie. no tuition fees).
WRIT1999 is restricted to students who are in Year 11 in 2023 who meet one of the following criteria:
- are located regionally or remotely
- come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds
- attend one of the eligible schools (listed below)
- are participants in the Young Achievers Program School; or
- identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
Applications are closed. Applications closed at 5pm on Friday, 8 December, 2023. Please indicate on your application on what eligibility criteria you meet if you are not from an eligible school.
How to apply
Step 1: Read the rules and guidelines

Step 2: Permission and declaration form
Download the Permission and declaration form (PDF, 198 KB), and read and complete the relevant fields. Obtain parental/guardian consent. Incomplete fields will result in processing delays and may result in your application not being considered.
Step 3: Complete the online application
- Download and have handy during the application our WRIT1999 Online Application Guide.
- Access the online application via the link at the bottom of this page.
- When completing the 'personal information' section, please useyour your official full name as it appears on your QCAA/school record.
- When starting the application, to undertake ESP select 'Non-award study'.
- Under 'Course details', select 'Effective Thinking and Writing (WRIT1999)'.
- Complete all other sections as prompted, and as per the above Online Application Guide.
- Under 'Evidence and Document Upload' include:
- Year 11 Semester One report card
- signed Permission and Declaration Form (both parent/guardian and school* permission required)
- passport and visa documents (international students only.
- Please note in the comments field which eligibility criteria you meet.
- You can then review your application before clicking 'Submit'.
- Once your application has been assessed and you are deemed eligible, you will be sent an offer which you must log in to accept. No written nor signed acceptance is required.
- If you do not accept your offer by the required time, you will be unable to participate in the Enhanced Studies Program.
- Important: check the email address you used for your application, including your junk mail folder, for updates on the status of your application.
* This may be your School Principal, Guidance Officer or other authorised school representative.

Benefits for students:
- Enhanced prospects for success in Year 12 studies.
- Improved skills in gathering and assessing evidence, constructing arguments or interpretations and presenting findings in an effective way.
- Students who successfully complete WRIT1999 will be eligible to receive one adjustment towards their UQ entrance rank (1-99 scale) through the Subject Incentive Scheme.
- ESP students who later enrol in a relevant UQ degree may apply for credit for their completed course, depending on which degree they enrol in. This requires approval by the relevant Faculty.

Student accommodation (The Women's College)
We are offering fully catered on-campus accommodation at The Women's College located at The University of Queensland, St Lucia campus.
Students will be supervised by a staff member.
